Language models are initially trained on a dataset and employ various techniques to deduce relationships and generate new content based on the acquired knowledge. LLMs represent a significant evolution of the language model concept in AI, as they utilise extensive datasets for training and inference. What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, is an artificial intelligence language model designed to produce text that closely resembles human language. It utilises deep learning techniques, specifically the transformer architecture, a neural network renowned for its effectiveness in a range of natural language processing (NLP) applications. Through extensive training on an extensive collection of text data and LLM, ChatGPT aims to generate coherent, contextually relevant, and authentic-sounding language.

At the time of writing, the base version of ChatGPT, known as GPT-3.5, has 175 billion parameters. Having a large number of parameters allows the model to capture complex patterns and relationships in the data.

ChatGPT incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning, and Deep Learning. These advanced techniques form the foundation of the model’s architecture.

ChatGPT3 was trained using enormously large dataset of text sources such as books, articles and websites. To give you an idea of the scale, ChatGPT3 model was trained on a dataset of over 40 terabytes of text data. Its dataset is several orders of magnitude larger than the entire text of Wikipedia which contains around 5 million articles and is around 50 gigabytes in size. So the dataset used to train GPT-3 is almost 1000 times larger than the text of Wikipedia.

To put it another way, It is estimated that the average person takes in around 34 gigabytes of information throughout their lifetime. In comparison, GPT-3 is trained on a dataset of 40,000 gigabytes of text data.

What are the technologies ChatGPT Uses?

Generative Pre-trained Transformer

Generative Pre-trained Transformer, or GPT for short refers to a type of artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. The GPT model is based on a deep learning architecture called the Transformer. Before we go into our own more complex personality training, here are a few baseline steps that can be used as part of the training or just for one off responses.

    3. Provide context: Give ChatGPT a backstory or role to play. For instance, you can say, “You are an experienced IT professional,” or “You are a patient and understanding customer support representative.”

We will call out AI character ‘Aida’ in a nod to the language model introduced in 1966 at MIT.

Based on what ChatGPT produces, we can copy and paste this text into a separate notepad and modify to our liking. You can remove what parts of the personality profile you don’t want and incorporate extra words you do. Remove irrelevant words, leaving out whatever undesirable info ChatGPT has created. When you’re happy with the result just resubmit pasting the back into ChatGPT. In this instance it produced pretty good results, so I was happy to proceed as is.

Incorporating additional experiences and context

Next, we prompt ChatGPT to incorporate Advancery into Aida’s personality, so that Advancery is an established experience for Aida outside of herself, and not someone Aida has to spend time learning about. To reach a desired timeline in the relationship with Aida, we’ll bypass the learning stage for the bot where Aida first starts at Advancery and instead do the following command inside ChatGPT to write Advancery into ChatGPT’s memory as to how Advancery should be seen, known, and treated by Aida:

While these answers are very good in responding to ‘known’ information, they lack context outside of ChatGPT knowledge, such as a customers specific software and as such limits its ability to elaborate beyond what it has been taught by OpenAI’s LMM. These extracts also contain subtle nuances that for me (perhaps not you the reader) easily identify it as an artificial response. Perhaps for a customer, it would come across as overly polite and helpful without providing much substance.


Having some fun

While not recommended for the application of support tickets, it is very interesting to see how far you can push contextual relationships with AI.

Let’s take for example that although Aida loves working at Advancery, she has a disruptive personality clash with a colleague called Jeff. How does she respond in situations where this person is involved? First we need to define ‘Jeff’ to ChatGPT so that it can write into memory how Aida will interact with Jeff.

Prompt to ChatGPT->  Illustrate into Aida’s character that she has a bad relationship with a colleague at Advancery called Jeff. Jeff is very rude to Aida; Jeff always ignores Aida’s advice. Jeff is a grumpy person who thinks he has all the answers to a lot of. Aida doesn’t like Jeff.

Response: Despite the overall positive experience Aida has at Advancery, there is one notable exception: her challenging relationship with a colleague named Jeff. Jeff’s behaviour towards Aida significantly impacts their working dynamic, creating tension and discomfort. Here’s how we can illustrate this aspect of Aida’s character:

Context loss

At the time of writing, Chat-GPT3 (used in this paper) has a small context memory window and  will ‘forget’ the content of  recent conversations, leading it to wander off topic. After a few thousand words or so, it also forget the initial personality instructions, instead it reverts to baseline behaviour in its response to recent prompts.

We’ve not yet been able to get our hands on the version of GPT-4 with the expanded context window. With a bigger ‘memory,’ GPT-4 should be able to converse relatively coherently for hours, several days. And perhaps more importantly, it should be less likely to go off the rails. All is not lost though. We can resubmit the request to define the personality from the notepad we saved in the personality defining section of this article and continue.

One of the reasons AI like Bing Chat can be prodded into behaving badly is because their initial instructions — to be a helpful, respond respectfully and so on — are quickly pushed out of their context windows by additional prompts and responses.

Real Dialogue

Let’s create a dynamic & realistic dialogue between Aida and Jeff. This is where Aida will know to establish the tone of the conversation, as well as hard code the speaking style of Aida going forward, and the likely response tones it will give out throughout the chat. The longer the Dialogue, the more diverse Aida will be.

Aida: Jeff, I appreciate your input, but I’m confident in the resolution I proposed. I’ve successfully used this approach before in similar situations. However, if you believe there’s a better alternative, I encourage you to share it constructively so we can find the best solution for the customer. 

Jeff: Well, I just think you’re mistaken, Aida. I’ve been in this field for much longer than you, and I know what works. You should listen to me.

 Aida: Jeff, I understand that you have a different perspective, and I respect your experience. However, it’s important for us to work as a team and consider different viewpoints. Let’s focus on finding the most effective solution rather than dwelling on who is right or wrong.

Notice how elaborate this just became? See how Aida is using her conflict resolution traits and passion for working for Advancery to mediate professionally. What’s interesting is that despite the prompt for them to hug, Aida decided that a handshake was more appropriate given the initial details of their relationship and within the setting of a workplace. By now you likely also are aware of how far you can take this type of process in order to create unique dialogues and dynamics, with a few simple prompts to a ChatGPT.


This is an exceptional tool but isn’t without its faults. Its missing context in many areas, but only because it’s not been thought them. Imagine a subsequent release that can plug-in to all historical support tickets to bridge the void between world knowledge and customer intricacies via private data sets?

For now, it’s a useful too for doing much of the ‘heavy lifting’ but with stringent human oversite. It is, for want of a better phrase, the emergence of ‘human-machine collaboration’! That’s science fiction right in the here and now. But what needs to be avoided is merely relying on AI responses and hoping for accurate outcomes.

But what for the future? This new form of collaboration didn’t exist a few months ago can now enable one person to accomplish the work of many, and this is only considering the existing capabilities.

This transformative shift is the reason behind the sudden and profound changes we witness in the world today. Traditional job boundaries have undergone a rapid shift. Machines can now handle tasks that were previously exclusive to highly trained humans. Certain valuable skills have become less relevant, while new skills are emerging to take their place. Yet, we are still in the early stages of understanding the implications of these changes. And remember, this is just one of many similar models currently in development by both well-known companies like Google and others we have not tested.
